Spending Wisely When Everything is On Sale

Right now there are a lot of sales going on, some better than others, for almost anything you can think of. Big box retailers are doing what they can to keep online ordering and shipping operations up and running to keep their big businesses afloat.

And in addition to the big box retailers, local shops (we’re seeing this in Jersey City) have been doing this too! (DBK is even offering our virtual interior design services at between 20-30% off of their in person counterparts!) From a business perspective, we are all trying to find ways to keep afloat during this challenging time and offer options to shoppers who are likely a little stir crazy, while possibly strapped for cash, or worried that they might be soon.

With all that said, if you are finding yourself stir crazy and not content with your space, or just idly scrolling through online shops to see what strikes your fancy, I want to share some tips to shop smarter!

As much as possible, go in with a plan! When you know what you and your space truly need, you are more likely to be focused and searching for those items rather than things you might already have or things that might not last and either get returned or donated down the road when you realize that it’s not the best fit.

Make a list of the rooms/areas in your home that are really making you twitch right now. (This is as simple as opening a new note on your smart phone.) Once you’ve made this list, try to break it down into bite sized pieces by asking yourself a few questions:

-What about this space feels off?

-Is there something already here that isn’t work and should be removed?

-Is there an obvious something missing that could amp up this space and make it feel more complete/cozy/relaxing (whatever vibe you’re going for)?

Once you’ve worked your way through this list, and identified what could help, try eliminating those things that should be removed and see how you feel before you shop. Did that help? Build from that.

Once you’ve identified what could be added to achieve that feeling you are craving in your space, shop with those key details in mind.

And then, once you find the thing you’ve been searching for, add it to your cart AND WAIT to check out. This waiting game is to give you the opportunity to really envision the piece in the space, see how you feel about it, does it seem like you can’t live without it, or does it seem like a cheap frills fix? Pay attention to when the sale ends and go back to the piece and buy it if it passes the waiting test.

Going through these motions will help you spend less overall and shop a little smarter to ensure that you aren’t spending just for the instant gratification of getting a good deal - which also feels so good!
