6 Reasons Every Mom Should Have a Well-Designed Home
Motherhood is a beautiful journey, but it's also one filled with relentless demands, emotional labor, and often, very little time or space for rest...ask me how I know 🙃
As interior designers, we are always thinking about beauty and function, but when we design with moms in mind, the impact goes much deeper. A well-designed, functional space doesn't just make a home look good—it actively supports mom's well-being.
Here are 6 reasons why every mom should have a home that actively supports her and her family.
1. Reducing Mental Load Through Functional Design
Mental load refers to the invisible work that needs to be done to manage the household—from scheduling appointments to keeping track of groceries. Although culturally we are starting to see a shift, this is something that typically falls on mom, and even with partner support, it's likely she's still carrying around a lot of information to support the family and keep the household running. It's a lot! And cluttered, disorganized spaces only add to this burden 🫠
Functional design can help! There are many little things you can do to reduce some of that burden on mom, without doing a full overhaul at home.
Design Tip: Incorporate intuitive storage, labeled zones, and improve sight-lines. Think about streamlining the kitchen or adding a family hub (like an organization station) near the entryway. These changes (big or small) can significantly lighten the mental load.
2. Creating Calm for Emotional Regulation
Visual chaos contributes to emotional chaos. Spaces that are overstimulating, loud, or cluttered can trigger stress and irritability. Calm, intentional design helps moms find moments of peace so they can self-regulate. While we can't force the kids to be calm and quiet, and we can't smooth out the emotional rollercoaster that kids will naturally experience, we can create a space that allows mom to escape some of the visual chaos to find moments of calm at home.
Design Tip: Use a cohesive color palette throughout the home, and layered lighting (team no unnecessary big lights 🙅♀️). Soft textures and minimal decor can transform a space into a serene retreat.
3. Encouraging Rest and Personal Time 🤫
Moms are notorious for putting their own needs last. A space that supports rest while prioritizing mom's personal interests can help change that. Whether it's a bedroom sanctuary or a cozy chair in a quiet corner, rest should always be baked into the design.
Design Tip: Combine comfort with nearby hobby storage. Consider a reading chair and an end table with a lower shelf for a book basket, knitting accessories, or easy access to mom's other favorite things to create an inviting personal nook. In her bedroom, think about adding blackout curtains, plush bedding, and noise-reducing features or a sound machine to welcome and encourage restfulness.
4. Supporting Connection and Boundaries
Moms need both: connection with their families and healthy boundaries. The right layout can encourage family togetherness and create space for privacy or focus.
Design Tip: Designate zones for play, work, and relaxation. That personal nook we outlined above sends a clear signal to your family that this space is for mom. If mom is a fitness enthusiast, carve out space for her Peloton, yoga mat and some weights or whatever gear she needs so she can get into her zone and focus 🧘♀️
5. Empowering Moms to Reclaim Identity
Motherhood can sometimes blur personal identity. When a space reflects a mom’s style, values, and passions, it nurtures her sense of self.
Design Tip: Your house shouldn't look like your neighbor's--it should be a reflection of you, and the same goes for mom's space! Include details that speak to her, photos from her favorite places, pillows in colors she loves, and meaningful accessories. These personal touches remind her she's more than just a caregiver 👒🧢🎀
6. Leveraging Beauty to Boost Mood 🤩
Design isn't just about function (Although that's a big piece!). Science tells us that aesthetically pleasing spaces actually activate the brain's pleasure centers, offering emotional uplift and a sense of joy.
Design Tip: Don’t shy away from beauty. Adding fresh flowers, curated artwork, or little pieces that you're just drawn towards can really spark joy. These touches are powerful mood boosters 💥
Final Thoughts: Design with Intention, Design with Heart
